The Vienna Werkstätte Rug Collection

The Vienna Werkstätte Rug Collection honours the early 20th century alliance of artists and designers, known as Wiener Werkstätte, who sought to eliminate the boundary between craft and fine art through well-designed and functional objects.

Influenced by the Werkstätte’s hallmark commitment to craftsmanship and avant-garde design, Elte’s contemporary patterns are balanced through the use of an old-world Persian knot. Hand-knotted from wool and silk, the collection achieves dimension through carving, distressing and oxidization.

Redefining Craftsmanship: The Legacy of the Wiener Werkstätte

Founded in 1903 by Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, and patron Fritz Waerndorfer, the Wiener Werkstätte redefined modern craftsmanship. Their vision united fine and applied arts, producing furniture, textiles, and decorative objects celebrated for their clean lines, geometric patterns, and exceptional detail—embodying an enduring dialogue between artistry and function.

I admit everything
practical and necessary,
but I also think that we
                    always have a duty
                    to give pleasure.
                    This joy is the
                    principal purpose
                    of our existence.”

Silk fibres create dimensionality, enriching the play of light on the surfaces of the rugs.

Crafting Culture: The Legacy of the Wiener Café

Designed by members of the Wiener Werkstätte, the Wiener Café blended modern design with Viennese café culture. From Josef Hoffmann’s meticulously crafted furniture to the custom tableware and textiles, every detail reflected the Werkstätte’s commitment to beauty and function, creating an immersive environment that captured Vienna’s creative spirit. Just as the objects in the Wiener Café were meant to be lived with, this rug collection brings the same enduring beauty and practicality to modern spaces, enriching the environments they inhabit with craftsmanship and creative expression.

Materiality Inspired by the Spirit of Wiener Werkstätte

Hand-knotted from wool and silk, the collection brings to life the meticulous craftsmanship of the Wiener Werkstätte. Patterns are sculpted through intricate carving to create depth and texture, while distressing imparts a sense of time and oxidization accentuates tonal variations. Like the Werkstätte’s celebrated work, these rugs are more than functional—they are visual and tactile expressions of art in everyday life.
